Labor Education Service, which publishes Workday Minnesota, got an exclusive video interview with British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg when he performed on the Minneapolis campus in support of affordable healthcare for University of Minnesota workers.
Bragg said that his initial inspiration for his often politically oriented music and social activism came in response to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s policies that decimated the unions and living standards of workers in the United Kingdom. He cited the essential role that unions play in uplifting the economies of Europe and America, as well as the livelihoods of workers. He pointed out that people can only realize true individual freedom if they have access to affordable healthcare, education and housing.
After appearing at the Sept. 26, 2013, rally organized by AFSCME at the university, Bragg performed at a sold out show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. He has sung all over the world for 30 years and his songs and albums have made it to the UK Top 10 list. Labor Education Service first recorded Bragg at a Miami rally protesting the Free Trade Area of the Americas Summit. His music and activism are featured on his website, http://www.billybragg.co.uk
