Workers at Hygienic Service Systems, an industrial laundry, voted 61-24 Thursday to unionize with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 789.
"It's a good group of people. We're thrilled for them," said Jennifer Christensen, secretary-treasurer of Local 789.
The laundry employs about 80 workers, all of them Latino, she said. About a half-dozen pregnant women - angry about how they were treated and new assignments they were given - started the organizing drive, Christensen said.
"It was a campaign about dignity and resprect. They felt they were being forced into quitting. Instead, they did something about it."
