Hundreds of delegates to the Minnesota AFL-CIO convention joined Walker Methodist nursing home employees and supporters in a march for workers' rights Tuesday.
Workers at Walker Methodist voted May 30 to be represented by AFSCME Council 14, but so far management has refused to recognize the union. AFSCME said the employer's actions go against the principles of the Methodist church, with which the facility is associated.
Speakers included national AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Linda Chavez-Thompson and Wilson Coker, a worker at Walker Methodist who was fired for union activity.
Employees at the south Minneapolis nursing home "want to have a voice in our workplace," said Coker, who has worked at Walker Methodist for 10 years. "We will not give up -- I promise you." The crowd responded with the chant, "We will win!"
